A First For Sheehan

Gowran’s Niall Sheehan gave an exhibition in cross-country running at the Leinster Intermediate 10K cross-country championships in Adamstown on Sunday. Niall was part of a group of twelve runners who got away from the field over the first lap of a seven-lap course. By the half way stage he was the leader of three, and as the laps progressed he pulled ever so far ahead that it appeared that he was in a race of his own as he coasted to victory.   The Kilkenny City Harriers duo, Toss Hayes and David McPherson were part of the leading group from the start but became parted from them by half-way. They then had their own private with McPherson’s greater stamina over the last 3K winning the duel. The result was a very satisfactory 5th, place for McPherson, who finished comfortably ahead of his clubmate who placed 6th. With these three in 1st, 5th and 6th and with Gowran men Lyndon Barcoe and Tom Brennan, P J Dwyer, St Senan’s and Bill Doherty, St Joseph’s all doing their bit it seemed the team would make the medals. Finishing in 5th place was a little disappointing.

In contrast the women’s Intermediate team finished third. They had no front runners but with  Maria Griffin, St Joseph’s in 12th place, and the rest showing good pace in the middle of the field, they were the happy recipients of the bronze medals. The other scorers, Caoilte Malone, 26th; Maria Murphy, 31st, Roseanna Murphy 42nd and Oonagh Hennessy 43rd,  were all from city club, Kilkenny City Harriers.
