St Patricks Day 5K Dash

There was a great turnout for the St Patrick’s Day Dash with in excess of 300 lining up at the start. Mayor Martin Brett, accompanied by a delegation from Moret Sur Long, got the DASH under way with a shrill blow of the whistle.

Runners, Joggers, Walkers, Ladies pushing buggies and men pushing buggies streamed onto the ring road, headed down by Naddy’s, into and around the Castle Park and back to the finish at the Watershed.

Gowran athlete, Tommy Evans, raised the first major cheer of the day when he crossed the finish line in 16 minutes 15 seconds. Exactly one minute later it was David McPherson’s turn to raise the cheer as he crossed into second place. Some 25 seconds later it was Kevin Fenlon who arrived to claim the third prize.

There was a closer finish for the ladies with Martina O’Dwyer taking first place in 19mins 20 seconds, just twelve seconds ahead of Niamh Richardson. Third prize was claimed by Mary Molloy in 20 mins 39 seconds.

The juveniles also put on a good show with Peter Lynch leading them home in 20 mins 43 seconds. Second boy was John Nolan (21.42) and third was John Dillon. Renowned cross-country and track athlete, Megan Morrissey was the first of the girls to finish. Her time was 20.52. Anna Sheehan (22.27) took second prize and Rebecca Kennedy was third.

At the presentation of the prizes Sean Lynch, PRO Kilkenny City Harriers, thanked all involved in making this event such a success. He paid particular tribute to the hard work of the Kilkenny Fit4Life group and the KCH stewards and officials. He also thanked the Watershed for the use of the athletic track, the Bridge Centre for parking, the OPW for access to the Castle Park, the Gardai for traffic control and the many spot prize sponsors.
