The senior athletes at Kilkenny City Harriers had a busy day in Santry on Sunday with two teams involved in Round 2 of the National League. A very strong and blustery breeze made life difficult for many particularly the 400m runners who faced into the wind as they turned into the home straight. It also impacted on competitors in high jump and Pole Vault.
The women’s team competed in The Premier Division and while all twelve members gave of their best it is unlikely that they will have garnered sufficient points to qualify for the final in August. The team finished 11th overall
The men’s team, using just ten men, were involved in The First Division and did exceptionally well and expect to represent the club in the league final. The mens team finished in 5th position
Best for the women were Cliodhna Manning, Lorraine O’Shea and Teresa Conlon each of whom finished in second place in their respective events- 200m, Long Jump and Hammer. Catriona Cuddihy, fast on the heels of Olympians Jessie Barr and Claire Bergin, placed third in the 400m. The 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams both finished in third place.
In the men’s league Michael Bowler, Brian Maher and Jack Saunders took the full nine points from Pole Vault, 5000m and 400m respectively. Bowler added a further seven points when he came second in High Jump and Saunders did likewise in the 200m. Eoin Power, guesting from the St Joseph’s club, contributed fourteen points with second place finishes in 110m hurdles and 400m hurdles. Second placings from David McGeary in 100m and Jonathan FitzPatrick in the Steeplechase further boosted the Harriers score. All round this was a great team performance and hopefully a similar performance can be replicated in the final.
