Kilkenny Schools Excel in South Leinster

There were some great individual and team performances from Kilkenny Schools at the South Leinster Cross-country championships, which were held at the grounds of Cistercian College Roscrea.

Loreto got the day off to a winning start with team gold in Minor Girls. They were lead home by Ella Richardson who finished in second place.  Caoimhe Kelly, Grennan College finished in an excellent 12th place in the same race.

In the Minor Boys it was the turn of St Kierans who had Adam FitzPatrick finishing in silver medal position to leading his team into first place.

Annie O’Connor was the star performer for Loreto’s Junior girls and ran a quality race to win individual silver. For St Kieran’s the Junior Boys won bronze.

In the Intermediate boys race there was a ding- dong battle between the boys from St Kierans and the boys from Knockbeg. Knockbeg proved the stronger leaving the St Kierans lads to take the silver. However in the individual stakes St Kierans took the gold following a class performance by Peter Lynch. Peter bided his time until the start of the final lap when he pushed to the front and coasted to victory.

Aoibhe Richardson, Loreto, went to the front from the  start of the Senior Girls race  and when team-mate Anna Sheehan moved into second place it guaranteed them first team place.  Sinead Whelan, Grennan College, finished in third place leading the Thomastown Girls to second place in the same race. Niamh O Shea (9th) and ailis O Shea (13th) completed the Grennan College team. The final race, Senior Boys, saw another good win for St Kierans. Cormac Buggy was their first man home in third place. And then with Tom O’Keeffe having one of his best runs coming fourth, followed closely by Sean O’Neill and Luke O’Connor they were easy winners. The CBS Callan team, spearheaded by Sean Power (5th) and James Power (8th) won team bronze in the same race.
