Juvenile County Cross Country B Championships

KCH Girls Sweep Clean

Boys and girls gathered in great numbers for the Even-Ages Juvenile B Cross-country championships at a sun-drenched Kilmacow course on Sunday.

The hard-working members of host club, St Senan’s, marshalled a well laidout course and with Ed Williams on the whistle there was no letup from start to finish. Kilkenny City Harriers (KCH), winners of the A Championships last month were again out in force and were very much to the fore particularly in the girls races.  The Castlecomer club were strong in the boys races.

At under 8, Gowran girl, Sarah O’Donnell, was most impressive as she led from start to finish.  Rachel Kellyfor KCH took the individual gold in the under 10 race and having Hanah Kelly and Rebecca Roche in 4th and 5th places the city club were first team. However more was still to come in the under 12 race. Kate Drennan, Gowran, set the pace early on. But an aggressive Jennifer O’Keeffe, KCH,  soon hauled her in and as the race progressed her club mates Aine O’Connor, Rebecca Keane and Maeve Shaw moved ahead of the rest of the field. With O’Keeffe taking first place and O’Connor, Keane and Shaw finishing 2nd, 3rd and 4th KCH were setup not only for team gold but also for team silver.

Local club St Senan’s were the dominant force in the under 14 race. Ailish Coneely and Dearbhla Kearns won gold and silver and with Michelle McDonald in 4th place the team gold stayed in Kilmacow. Moving to the under 16 race KCH had a clean sweep winning team gold with Anna Sheehan, 1st, Nicola Murphy, 2nd and Aoibhe Richardson 3rd.   Thomastown’s Jordan Knight was the comfortable winner of the boys under 8 race. KCH’s Sean Burke was first home in the under 10 race. Castlecomer’s first team gold came in this race. Good running by Jack Appuzatto brought him the bronze. Nicky Connolly 7th and Sean O’Dornan 8th completed the scoring for the Castlecomer team. Tying on points with KCH the Comer boys were victorious on countback. John Joe Kelly, Brow Rangers, was the victor under 14 just ahead of Peter Lynch, KCH, with Eoghan Wallis, St Senan’s winning bronze.  A persistant, Nicholas Dunphy, KCH,  took individual bronze in the under 16 race to deny  the Castlecomer club a clean sweep. However with Donal Carroll winning gold, Steven Dowd taking the silver and Emmet Coogan in fourth place Castlecomer won team gold, ending the day on a high for the northern based club.
