Co B Novice Thomastown Jan 22nd

In the Men’s B Novice it took a sprint finish to separate first from second. From the halfway mark Thomastown’s Terry Brophy and Noel Maher, KCH, were out in front with no more than one stride between them. The more experienced Brophy, who tracked Maher all the way, was biding his time before making his move. This he did with 200m to go. Maher reacted immediately resulting in a 200m neck and neck sprint to the finish. It was a mere ten meters from the line that Maher produced that extra spurt that got him first across the line.

Thomastown with Danny Shannahan 3rd, Paul Dunne 4th and Pat Walsh 5th were team winners.

Gowran’s Deirdre Phelan, having gone away at the start was a comfortable winner in the Novice Ladies race. Rebecca McGee, KCH, in third place at the half-way stage, upped the pace over the final lap to take the silver ahead of Thomastown’s Irma O’Keeffe who finished third. Thomastown who had Carol Whelan 4th and Breda O’Shea 5th won first team medals.
