Sophie Becker (St Josephs) made the 400m Semi Final in a new outdoor PB of 53.69. She did not get to the final however but is happy with her results. Donagh Mahon (Gowran) was well below his 2.18 best when he jumped 2.02 and did not make the final round.
Schools International
In Swansea Wales, we had two athletes competing in the schools international. Aine Kirwan (Thomastown) was competing in the 1500m Steeplechase and Jordan Knight (St Josephs) in the 400m and 4 x 400m relay. Similiar to the Tailteann Games (which are the qualifying races for the schools) Aine had a race of ups and downs. Experience will sort this out. She started well being up with the main group but then dropped back at about 700m, only to have a storming last lap to gain substancially on the other athletes. In the end Aine was 6th in a new PB. This was Aine’s international debut.
Jordan has claimed the 400m as his new event. Last weekend in Swansea he was accompanied by Jed Walsh who seemed to just eclipse Jordan for most of the year. However that was about to change. With both young men competing in the green Irish vest for the first time, they now raced side by side as one. This time it was Jordan who seemed to have come out on top, when his finished 5th in a time of 50.78 not too far off his personal best. Jed was 6th in 51.50.
The 4 x 400m relay saw Jordan run the 2nd leg and he moved the team from 3rd place into 2nd which was maintained for the rest of the race. So a silver medal will be coming home to Thomastown where Jordan is from. Well done to both Jordan and Aine. May there be many more internationals for them both.
