Leinster Schools Cross Country
The Leinster School’s Cross Country event finally got underway on Friday last in Navan, Co. Meath. The day had been postponed twice in the last few weeks, due to bad weather and the Pheonix Park still waterlogged after the deluge of rain throughout the month of February. With National Schools taking place on the weekend of the 7th March, the Leinster Schools had no choice but to relocate at the 11th eleventh hour to the Navan Adventure Centre, Co. Meath. The Kilkenny Secondary Schools were well represented with excellent running, with both individual and team honours for many Kilkenny Athletes. Daniel Greene Borris College once again stormed to victory in the Minor Boys finishing in 0:07:10, just one second ahead of Aidan Keyes of Patrician SS, Kildare. Kyrell Mtinsi St. Kieran’s College also won his Inter Boys race in fantastic style, running in 0:15:35 and leading his team to a 3rd place podium honour. There were numerous top 10 qualifying places with Laura Alyward Scoil Aireageil, finishing in 10th in 0:5:44 in the Minor Girls race. Emily O’Keeffe Loreto also finished in 10th place in the Girls Junior race in 0:8:00 to clinch her spot in the All-Irelands next weekend. Sinead Cormack Presentation, running in the Girls Inter race once again qualified after a solid run saw her finish in 9th place in 0:11:53. Shannon Doheny and Eleanor Doheny Loreto placed 9th and 10th respectively to lead the Loreto Senior Girls team to 1st place and cementing their place in the Nationals in Newtownabbey. Sam Woodcock St. Kieran’s led his team home to a 4th place finish with Sam placing 8th in the Junior Boys in 0:11.03.
Congratulations to all those who ran on the day and best of luck to all who qualified individually and on teams, that sees them head to Newtownabbey, Co.Antrim next weekend.
