Thomastown Athletic Club had a successful outing at the Leinster juvenile U9 – U11 pair events and U12 individual events at Navan on Saturday 29th May. The club had teams in the U9 Girls 60m & 300m represented by Aine Kirwan and Anna Cass. In the U10 girls 60m, 500m, long jump represented by Ciara O’Keeffe, Orla O’Keeffe & Dearbhla O’Reilly. In the U10 boys ball throw & 500m represented by Tom Holden & Edmond Fitzpatrick. In the U12 individual events ball throw, shot & 600m by Michael Power and Eoin Walsh
In the U9 girls team of Aine Kirwan and Anna Cass got the day off to a good start competing in their first leinster championships by putting in fine runs to win bronze medals in both the 60m and 300m, This was followed by the boys U10 team of Tom Holden and Edmund Fitzpatrick collecting 3rd place in a close competition in ball throw in windy conditions. Tom and Edmond also competed in the 500m but finished outside the medals.
In the girls U10 500m Ciara and Orla O’Keeffe ran a strongly to finish in 2nd place. Ciara O’Keeffe and Dearbhla O’Reilly competed in the long jump finished 5th While Orla and Dearbhla also competed in the 60m but finished outside the medals.
In the boys individual competition Michael Power put in two good performances finishing 2nd in both the ball throw and shot put. Eoin Walsh competed in very competitive 600m heats and qualified for the final but unfortunately picked up an injury in the heat and wasn’t able to run the final.
St Josephs athletes R O Connor and K Griffin were second in the boys u10 500m.
For Gowran AC Gowran Sarah O Donnell and Aoife O Dwyer getting first place in the 60m and joint first in the 300m.
Other athletes who competed and were unlucky not to be among the medal winners were Connor Nolan in the u 12 shot and Brogan McAvanny and Jim lennon in the 300m and the long jump.
From Castlecomer AC James Buggy was 4th in the u12 Ball Throw
KCH: under 11 boys, Darragh Maher and Sean Burke, combined well to win silver in the 600m.
There were also some excellent performances from the girls in the Under 12 Individual Championships. Ciara Deely competing in three events won gold in 60m Hurdles, bronze in Long Jump and finished fourth in High Jump. Orla Casey ran a fine 60m final in just over nine seconds winning bronze. Martyna Balcer also did well coming fourth, fifth and sixth respectively in Long Jump, High Jump and 60m Hurdles.
Well done to all who travelled and took part in their events
The medal winners now go forward to the All Irelands in Templemore on June 25th.
