Results Day 1: Juvenile U8 – U18 and O40.- Kilkenny County Cross Country Championships – 5th Oct 2014

Championship Time for Cross-Country Runners at Ballycurren Cross.

The new cross-country championship season kicked off on Sunday with the juvenile even-ages and men over 40 races. The event was hosted by the St Joseph’s athletic club in fields kindly made available at Ballycurran Cross, Tullogher, by local farmer Mr James Brennan. Despite the weather alert for the afternoon there was a good turnout with close on fifty runners going to the start of the under 10 and under 12 races. There were little or no surprises among the individual winners with last years form runners again very much to the fore. Thomastown’s Aine Kirwan led her team to victory in girls under 12 while Cathal Bergin won gold for St Joseph’s in the boys race. The under 14 titles went to Ciara O’Keeffe, Thomastown and Oisin Griffin, St Joseph’s. Kilkenny City Harriers won both under 16 races courtesy of Annie O’Connor and Luke FitzPatrick respectively. Lauren Dermody, Castlecomer, was a comfortable winner in the girls under 18 race and Peter Lynch had a similar outcome in the boys race. In the men’s over 40 Paul Moran, Kilkenny City Harriers, set the pace from the early stages. Sean Caulfield, St Senan’s gave chase but was unable to close on Moran who ran onto take first place. Caulfield took the silver and Thomastown’s Tommy Shefflin won the bronze.
The venue for next week is Castlecomer when the local club will host round two of the county championships. There will be juvenile races for under 7’s to under 19’s and Ladies over 40 and Men over 45. The first race will be on the starting line at 11.00am.
