With a strong tradition and plenty representation in these events from year to year, Kilkenny once again came home with medals. In what has become a traditional loop around the church in Gowran – I cannot help but be drawn back to memories of competing there in the days of the 4 county league. The second stage of the League was always that same loop, 1 mile for the ladies and 2 miles for the men…………what great races they were – shame it has disappeared as an event. Anyhow getting back to the present………..
James Kelly of Castlecomer who had a great cross country season, has now added the Leinster Novice Road Championship to his repitoire of victories in the last 12 months. The novice ladies may not have had individual winners but Kilkenny were 3rd in the county section and Gowran AC were third in the club category.
Success continued into the Masters with Donna Dunne (KCH) 2nd in the o/35s and Adele Walsh (St Senans) finishing 2nd in the Masters o/40. In the over 50s Kilkenny as a county dominated with Niamh Richardson (KCH) 1st, Francis Mullally (St Josephs) 2nd and Cathy Millet (KCH) 3rd.
In the club section St Josephs were 3rd overall and also 3rd in the over 35 section. In the County section Kilkenny were 2nd county with Adele Walsh, Donna Dunne and Barbara Rossiter.
And to the men – with James Kelly (Castlecomer) crowned the Novice Champion, it was disappointing to see no team there. Surely an opportunity for the next time around.
The masters men did not fair out as well as the ladies in the county. Come on guys you have to have a go at changing this for next year. Then men over 50 did manage to secure a county team – 3rd. They were led home by Sean Caulfield (St Senans) our resident flying grocer and supported by Tom Walsh and John Davis of Thomastown. Well done to all. Thanks to Gowran AC for some excellent hosting.
