It is not every day an athlete gets to set a new record in Athletics. This weekend saw four new Leinster records set by Kilkenny athletes in the Leinster Juvenile Track and Field Championships in Tullamore. The championships opened on a positive note when, in the first event of the day Tadgh Connolly (St Senans) broke the 6 year old shot putt record for the boy’s u/15 on his opening throw. With the new mark of 13.90 still a meter below this best, Tadgh is certainly going to make an impact in the All Irelands in July. Fiona Dillon (Thomastown) who had to sit out the Track season last year, due to injury, has returned for track duty with gusto, when she set a new record in the girl’s u/15, 1,500m with a time of 4 minutes 45 seconds, 6 seconds inside the old record which has stood since 2013. Incidentally Hannah Kehoe of Gowran who was 2nd to Fiona also broke the old record when she ran 4 minutes 48 seconds – 3 seconds off the old mark. And if this was not enough Fiona returned to Tullamore a day later and set a new 800m record of 2 minutes 16, breaking the old 8 year old record by 2 seconds. Two records in two days for one person – phenomenal. Erin Foely of St Josephs, competed in the triple jump for the first time and entered the triple jump scene with style when she set a new Leinster record in the u/15 girl’s triple jump. This all amounts to Kilkenny as a county having more new Leinster records over the two days than any other county.
