2018 ABBOTSTOWN AUTUMN OPEN XCOUNTRY
The day started with routine sunday morning chores on his Conahy farm and ended up later that evening with more routine chores on his Cohany farm. Between the two sets of farm work, Brian Maher manged to appear in Abbotstown, Dublin, run a 6km race and win the Masters section, thereby qualifying for the Irish Team for the Masters International. A feat he accomplished last year. Finishing 16th in the overall race, where Seniors, Masters and Juniors all ran together, Brian always had Ireland’s leading senior athletes in view including fellow Kilkenny county athletes Tom O’Keeffe and Eoin Everard.
Tom O’Keffee, currently on scolarship at UCD, running for UCD finished a brilliant 8th – making his u23 European selection looking closer. Eoin Everard (KCH) was 10th. Niall Sheehan of Gowran was 36th.
In the Ladies race Lauren Dearmody was the first of the Kilkenny ladies home in 21st place. Lauren will also be pursuing u23 selection this year. Bronagh Kearns of St Senans was 34th. Adele Walsh (St Senans) who gained international selection in the previous 2 years for the over 40s, suffered a little today when finishing 12th in her over 40 race. But no doubt Adele will bounce back again in the coming weeks.
Well done to all athletes. Great role models for our up and coming strong junior squads.
