Leinster Combined Events
Many of the relay athletes were back in action on the Sunday, again in the SETU for the Leinster Combined Championships where competitors from U11 right up to Masters took on the quadrathlon and pentathlon throughout the day. The quadrathlon for the U11 and U12 comprised of the 60m sprint, long jump, 600m and this year the turbo javelin instead of the shot put. The pentathlon would see athletes compete in the 80mH/100mH, long jump, high jump and shot put in the juvenile boys, girls, senior and master ladies competition. This year the U18, U20 and Senior Men’s events saw huge changes with the men now competing in long jump, javelin, discus, 200m and 1500m. The multi-events competitions are a great way for athletes to try out various disciplines and the bringing in the competition for the younger juveniles will keep the enthusiasm for athletics alight for years to come. Although the weather conditions weren’t too favourable for some of those running their 600m in torrential showers later in the day, overall the rain held off for a great day for all. The day brought more silverware to Kilkenny as athletes from Castlecomer, Gowran, Kilkenny City Harriers, Nuenna and Thomastown all hit the podium for their efforts. First up were Patrick Comerford and Cian Nolan from Castlecomer who took 1st and 3rd place in the Boys U11 Quad. Luke Hanlon Thomastown took the bronze in the Boys U12 Quad. Daniel McInytre Kilkenny City Harriers took the silver in the Boys U13 Pentathlon, while Joey Nolan Nuenna clinched the silver in the Boys U14 event. Kelly Charters and Zoe Beck Kilkenny City Harriers both won silver in the U16 and U18 competition. Gowran had 5 athletes on the podium for winning in the Pentathlon, Oren Denieffe winning silver in the Boys U16, Kate Hayden claimed bronze in the U18 Girls, James Kelsey took gold again in the U20 Men’s, while Matt Ryan won silver in the Master Men O40, and Marie Deegan won gold in the O40 Ladies. Well done to all for their fine performances especially those competing in their first combined events. A huge thanks most go to Leinster Athletics and all the amazing officials for hosting another full weekend of athletics for everyone. Full results below;
