Leinster Day 6 and 7
The final weekend of the Leinster Track and Field Championships showcased numerous New Championship Records, massive PB’s across both track and field, and for a select few the highlight was achieving U18 European Standards for their gallant efforts. Kilkenny City Harriers Kate Maher was one such athlete to achieve the U18 European Standard in the 400m on Saturday. Kate had an incredible run on the day, running 55.41 to set a new PB and run under the Athletics Ireland standard of 55.60 for the Girls 400m. Kate placed 2nd behind Aisling Slevin Rataoth, with both girls also running faster than the previous championship record of 57.20 that was set back in 2023. Kate then returned on Sunday for the 200m, where she set another new PB of 24.87 to take the win, but just missed out on breaking the championship record of 24.74 that was set way back in 2012 by fellow KCH sprinter Cliodhna Manning. There was incredible success for the County as a whole with 23 gold, 20 silver, 23 bronze and 21 4th place finishes won over the two days. The majority of those of placed in top 4 will now progress onto the National Championships at the end of the month, with the exception of some younger events that are provincials only. There were notable performances from many of the athletes including Tom Doherty St. Joseph’s and Daniel Greene KCH who medalled in the both the 800m and 1500, Tom won 1st in U14 1500m and 3rd in the U14 800m, while Daniel won 1st in all three events U15 300m, 800m and 1500m. Luke Hanlon Thomastown added to his combined medal from last week with another in the boys U12 60mH. St. Senan’s walkers all performed exceptionally with all 4 taking gold in their respective races, U13 Ailbhe Ni Dhubhda, U14 Ellie May Aylward, U15 Tadhg O’Callaghan and U17 Kerry Widger. For Gowran the pole vault podium turned red and white with gold for U15 Sean Farrell, U18 Aoibhlinn Steger and U19 James Kelsey. Joey Nolan Nuenna was back jumping in the U14 high jump on Sunday and although he narrowly missed out on a medal he will qualify for Nationals with his 4th place finish. Brow Rangers throwers were dominant on both days with both Leah Hennessy and Sophie O’Neill winning two medals and a 4th place each. Leah won 1st in discus, 3rd shot put, and 4th hammer, while Sophie won two bronze in discus and hammer and 4th place finish in shot put. Well done to all the athletes on their performances and achievements and best of luck to all those who head to the Nationals in Tullamore at the end of the month. Full results below:
