Leinster Pairs, U12-U13
Double podium places for Castlecomer and Thomastown Duo’s in the Leinster Pairs
Day 3 of the Leinster Track and Field Championships got underway in Tullamore on Sunday with the U9-U11 Pairs and U12 and U13 all competing in sprints, distance, jumps and throws. Juvenile athletics is certainly on a high at the moment, with record numbers entering for County and Provincial events. In the U11 Girls Pairs there were 86 athletes competed for sprints and 80 for Long Jump, a testament to the popularity of the sport at the moment. Leinster provincial can be highly competitive, so to compete and medal in this competition is an amazing achievement for athletes, coaches and clubs. The top three pairs who medalled will now go onto the Nationals at the end of June. The top 4 athletes from individual competitions (except the middle distance which is 3) will also go onto to compete at Nationals. There were plenty of medals coming home to Kilkenny as three clubs medalled in the younger age pairs. Castlecomer’s Cian Nolan and Diarmuid Maher claimed bronze in the U11 600m and the U11 60m sprint. Thomastown also had double medal success with Georgia Keyes and Julianne Doyle taking silver in the U11 60m sprint and silver in U11 turbo javelin. Thomastown’s youngest duo Amelia Dunne and Erin Smyth took silver in their U9 long jump just missing out on gold by 1cm. Their clubmates Hugo Jasinghe and Cian Hickey also took silver in the Boys U10 turbo javelin. Castlecomer’s Patrick Comerford and Oisin Fogarty took the gold in the Boys U11 turbo javelin, with both boys having excellent throws. Patrick threw a phenomenal 30.10m while Oisin threw 17.26m, for a combined 47.36m for the gold and over 10m longer than 2nd place. Kilkenny City Harriers Amenze Victor and Florence O’Donoghue ran two super sprint heats to take the bronze in the Girls U11 60m sprint.
In the Girls U13 600m final Millie Walsh St. Senan’s ran a great race to finish in 3rd place for the bronze medal, and Aaron Tyrell Kilkenny City Harriers stormed to victory in the Boys U13 600m final to win gold in a time of 1:43.18. Thomastown’s Luke Hanlon was in action in the Boys U12 Shot Put winning gold with 9.09m on his second throw. Kilkenny City Harriers won 3 medals overall in the high jump, Roisin Hyland claimed silver in a 3way tie with three athletes claiming silver at 1.20m. In the Girls U13 competition the top 3 all finished on 1.41m with Aoibhinn Hyland winning bronze on the countback. Conor Lawrence Delaney won his U13 high jump with an impressive 1.46m to claim the gold.
The inter county relay had great success with the U11 Girls winning gold, the U11 Boys claiming bronze, the U13 Girls just missed out by .06 second to finish in 4th, while the U13 Boys were very unlucky to be disqualified after the race. Congratulations and well done to everyone who competed on the day, with more success to follow next Saturday for the relays. Full results below:
