County Novice and Juvenile Uneven Age

Kilkenny City Harriers complete a full sweep of shields as they clinch the overall “Bishop Shield” in the juvenile competition, the Novice Men’s Cup and the Novice Ladies Shield in Castlecomer on Sunday last. Castlecomer hosted day 2 of the Kilkenny County cross country with races for the uneven age juveniles and Novice A Men and Women. With all to play for in across all competitions the numbers attending were higher than the previous Sunday. Hosted superbly by Castlecomer AC and their committee again this year, the course was the typical cross country route with a tough hill, leaning into a slanted loop with plenty of cow pats to avoid along the way. The main 1000m loop was tough but manageable for all the juveniles on the day with the younger ages running two shortened sections, the U7 had 200m, while the U9 ran out in the 400m. The U7’s were off the line first under the starting orders of Bill Lacey St. Senan’s and Michael O’Keeffe Thomastown, rushing along the 200m with many of the last week’s medallists finishing in the top 10 again this week. Cara Gorman Thomastown led the girls home in 1st place, while Ryan Quirke KCH took the U7 boy’s top spot. In the U9 girls 39 athletes took to the start to run the 400ms, with Betty Carroll KCH winning the girls race and Ben Lannon Thomastown taking the gold in the U9 boys 400m. The largest race of the day was the U11 girls that saw a staggering 56 girls competing in the 1000m. A great run from Ava Ledingham KCH saw her secure the gold and led her team home for first place too. The U11 boy’s 1st and 2nd team was won by the host club Castlecomer with Diarmuid Maher winning top spot followed swiftly by Cian Nolan. The U13 girls had slightly lower numbers compared to the U11 but still 36 runners kicked off the 2000m race that was won comfortably by Emily Maher Thomastown, with KCH taking the first team place. In the boys U13 Daniel McIntyre KCH took the honours over the 2000m and also led the team home to 1st place, with Cian Shortall Gowran taking 2nd and the Gowran team 2nd. Abigail Hunt Gowran had another outstanding race in the girls U15 3000m to clinch the gold. Following on from her strong finish in the U14’s race last week, she took another gold pacing herself and executing the race with ease. Daniel Greene KCH ran away with the U15 3000m, with his club team mate Sam Woodcock taking 2nd, and Peter Grimley Gowran was 3rd and led his team to gold in the team event. The girls U17, U19 and Novice 3500m were all run together, with Emily O’Keeffe taking the U17 title, followed by Sophie Callery in 2nd and Heidi Ryan in 3rd. In the Ladies Novice KCH took the top spot and also the Ladies shield for the 1st team. Tara Ronan was first home for KCH and also took the Ladies Novice title. Tara Brett KCH was 2nd with Audrey Harrington Castlecomer taking the bronze. Gowran won 2nd team. Lewis Morgan St. Senan’s clinched the U17 gold with ease, while his club mates Conor Bradly took 2nd and Clemins Lange placed in 3rd.  Kyrell Mtinsi KCH had a lovely strong run to win both U19 and Men’s Novice title and lead the harriers home to win the Men’s cup. The Men’s team competition was the tightest of the day with only two points separating KCH and Nuenna, KCH winning the shield on 22 points in the end. Massive congratulations to everyone who ran on the day, and thanks to Bob Saunders on his PA system, Elaine, Dave, Brian and Rocky on the finish line and everyone from the County Board running the day so well, and thanks to Castlecomer for another great event.
