Even County & O50’s

St. Joseph’s take the double in the Masters on the first day of the County Cross Country season, that got underway in Ballycurrin on Sunday. St. Joseph’s who were hosting the event again this year produced some fine performances as both the O50 Women and Men titles went to the local club. In the Women’s 3000m Marian Beck Barrow Harriers ran a superb race to claim the gold, with Maggie Helen O’Connor St. Joseph’s finishing quickly behind for silver to lead home the team. Susan Lanigan was 3rd individual ahead of team mate Tracey Malone with all 3 ladies scoring for St. Joseph’s to claim the O50 Women’s Shield.  The Men’s 3000m was won by Mick Kelly Gowran, who is in flying form following his international race just two weeks ago. Kelly had a fine run to finish ahead of Kilkenny City Harriers Graham Bourne in 2nd and Eamonn Bookle St. Joseph’s in 3rd. Both St. Joseph’s and Gowran teams scored the same points with St. Joseph’s just clinching the top spot and the Men’s Shield on count back. The juvenile competition kicked off with the non-championship U8 Girls, with nearly 20 athletes from 6 of the clubs taking to the start line for their 200m race, where they ran with all their might to power through the finishing chute for their medals. Top spot went to Amelia Gorman Thomastown, with Aoife Phelan St. Joseph’s in 2nd and Isabel Hennessey St. Senan’s in 3rd. The U8 Boys were just as enthusiastic racing through their 200m at speed, Fionn Quinn Kilkenny City Harriers was the first home, next in Jim Ryan Thomastown and Michael Maher Castleocmer taking silver and bronze. The U10 Girls 600m race saw 34 athletes take to the start line, the largest race of the day, with Kilkenny City Harriers Sadie Ledingham taking gold, Grace Nolan Gowran hot on her heels in 2nd and Emma Malone Castlecomer running in for 3rd. Castlecomer claimed 1st and 2nd spot in the Boys U10 600m, Ciaran Brennan just finishing ahead of club mate Daire Smith and Ollie Brennan Barrow Harriers finishing in 3rd. Well done to all in St. Joseph’s who volunteered in both setting up the course and delivering a great day of athletics once again. Next Sunday will see the Juvenile Uneven Ages and Novice Men and Women running in Castlecomer. Full results from the day as follows:
