Leinster Intermediate,Masters and Juvenile Relays

Fantastic Day at the Leinster Intermediate and Masters Cross Country Championships and the Juvenile Relays. Kilkenny athletes were in flying form. Lauren Dearmody has been the in-form lady from the county all season. Today she proved that the Christmas interuption was not going to stop her, when she finished 2nd in the Intermediate Ladies race. This 20 year old Castlecomer girl is looking good for the National Intermediate race in Galway next month. She was followed home in 3rd place by St Josephs AC Sally Forristal who ran a truely magnificant race to take 3rd spot. This is all the more significant as Sally was out of action with injury for the latter 2 months of last season. And there was more to come – with the St Senan’s pair of Bronagh Kearns in 6th and Michelle McDonald in 8th , this secured victory for the county. St Senan’s went a bit further by taking bronze in the Club section with Bronagh, Michelle, Aine Kinsella in 11th and Rachel Butler in 29th.

The Masters Ladies saw Adele Walsh (St Senan’s) take 2nd – again she is looking good for Galway next month. She was backed up by Castlecomers Imelda Kennedy and Gowrans Catriona Corr to take 3rd in the county section.

The Intermediate men had one county competitor Castlecomer’s James Kelly who ran a superb race to finish 5th. We hope to see him well up the field in Galway next month. And what more can we say about the super duper flying greengrocer come superstar veteran Sean Caulfield of St Seanns…… Sean is surely the runner bean of the county. He won the over 50 section with such ease that men 20 years his junior were left gasping in his wake. We are certainly going to be looking out for Sean in Galway.

The juveniles of Kilkenny had a great day with 3 gold and a bronze, plenty smiley faces and lots of happy texts and photos on their snapchat and instagram pages. You know what teenagers are like!!!!!! If Lauren Dearmody was the in-form lady of the day then the Gowran juveniles were the in-form club of the day – taking home 2 gold and 1 bronze. Rumour has it they are taking on the Thyestes chasers in 10 days’ time.

The boys u/12 team of Aaron Doyle, Liam O’Dwyer, Darragh Dunne, Ruairi Murphy, Tom Kehoe took gold with Ruairi eating up some 20m deficit to overcome the Ratoath athletes in the final sprint.
As if one gold was not enough the girls u/14 surprised many with another victory. Alot of credit goes to Maria Connolly who had an amazing second leg, moving the team from 5th to the leading position. The club held on to the lead with Elizabeth Connolly sailing down the home straight to her first ever Leinster medal. St Josephs were in hard luck, having held onto 3rd for so long they were out sprinted in the final few meters, relinquishing the 3rd medal 5m before the finishing line. Thomastown were in 5th spot.

The Girls u/16 quartet of Thomastown girls proved their dominance in this age group by repeating their victory from last year. With Hannah O’Keeffe fresh from her International debut and Aine Kirwan coming back to form all the time from her injury in September it would have taken a power house to beat them. They led from start to finish with no one coming close to them. Credit due to the Gowran girls who finished 3rd. It is not too often that Hannah Kehoe gets to have the company of her team mates on the podium – but today she did. Excellent race from these girls who have competed in counties and Leinster’s this year. Onwards and upwards girls – cross country pays off dividends. Well done to St Josephs who finished in 5th spot. Not a bad result to have 3 Kilkenny teams in the top 5.

A big thanks to Triona Foely of St Josephs AC for the juvenile photos.
