One would be forgiven for thinking the Lilliputians had taken over Kilkenny on Sunday such was the swarming numbers of our younger juvenile athletes that gathered in the Watershed for the inaugural Kilkenny County Sport Hall Athletics on Saturday. About 300 under 8s to under 11s from St Senan’s, KCH, St Josephs, Castlecomer, Thomastown, Gowran, Brow Rangers and more, could be seen doing standing jumps, turbo javelin, ball throwing, jumping through hoops, racing over obstacles and getting into all sorts of hybrid events. The noise was deafening but the craic was mightly. The aim of this program is to introduce younger athletes – perhaps our future star’s to the basic constructs of field events. All in all it was considered a fantastic day out and a great success. We will see you all next week in Kilmacow for a bit of the tougher stuff – running.
